What is Giving Tuesday?? #GivingTuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back. Charities, families, businesses, community centers and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: To Celebrate Generosity and Give. Why should you support WINC on Giving Tuesday? By supporting WINC, you play an important part in promoting Wisconsin’s Ecosystem Health. Here at WINC, wildlife rehabilitation focuses on the individual wildlife species. The goal is to care for every animal until it can be released back into the wild. If your pet becomes sick, you can take them to a veterinarian. Wild animals do not have “owners” to make sure that they get the care they need so wildlife becomes the responsibility of all us. Unfortunately, many of the wild patients that WINC provides medical care to are injured, orphaned or sick due to human interaction. WINC is open 365 days a year and is supported by a small staff & almost 140 volunteers, many of which have worked and volunteered here at WINC for more than 10 years! It is a lot of work to care for over 3,200 wild animals, a total of 61,152 since we began in 1994. Our staff & volunteers are willing to invest the time and energy needed to make a difference. Our volunteers donated 25, 330 hours of their time in 2018 to clean enclosures, prepare species specific diets, answer phone calls and admit incoming patients. We rely 100% on YOUR donations to pay for the food, medicines, housing needs and other supplies needed to care for over 3,200 wild patients, representing 140 types of native Wisconsin species,...

Did you know owls swallow their prey whole? Owls cannot digest the prey’s fur and bones, so then an owl pellet is created! Pellets are cast out of an owl’s mouth around 20 hours after they swallow their prey. The pellets found in this package are made at the Wildlife in Need Center by our resident owls (Dakota and Sova) as well as our owl patients. A pellet may even contain an entire skeleton! These pellets can be used for a fun activity to discover what types of animals owls eat, and can also supplement science classes. Pellet sizes will vary! Suitable for ages 6 & up, children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult. This program is limited to 24 participants. Program length: 1 hour, dissection of two pellets with diagram hand-outs. Heart of Canal Street is Potawatomi Hotel & Casino’s signature community program that raises fund for children’s charities–and the Wildlife In Need Center is in the running to be a beneficiary. Heart of Canal Street has raised more than $19 million for hundreds of area children’s charities since 1994. The program honors the Potawatomi tradition of nurturing younger generations so they grow to lead healthy, productive lives. Hosted by The International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council and Wildlife In Need Center Saturday, November 2nd, 2019 and Sunday, November 3rd, 2019 These two courses are provided as a package with total classroom time of eight hours. However, two certificates will be provided to participants upon successful completion. Developed specifically for wildlife care professionals, Wound Management provides a systematic review of the physiology and treatment of the most common types of soft-tissue wounds seen in injured mammalian and avian species. Topics include wound assessment, wound types, antibiotic therapy, cleaning and topical agents, bandaging techniques and the physiology and stages of wound healing. Fractures and wound management in herptiles are not covered in this course. Lab Included. Pain Management is designed to give wildlife care professionals a working knowledge of the vocabulary and concepts underlying the modern approach to pain management in mammalian and avian species. Topics include the physiology and clinical signs of pain, supportive care techniques, and drug therapy including indications, contraindications and side effects. Pre-Requisite: Basic Wildlife Rehabilitation strongly encouraged To receive a course completion certificate, students must successfully pass the online Pain and Wound Management exams with 70% or higher.
